A Modern Japanese Castle in the City Center of Toyama
Toyama Castle is located in the city center of Toyama. If you are passing by the city, the castle is the main place to visit. Toyama Castle was originally constructed in 1543, but it was destroyed multiple times throughout its history. The final version of the castle was built in concrete after WWII. Its appearance is quite modern, so it doesn’t have the charm of old Japanese castles, but it is still worth visiting when in Toyama. Also, I wouldn’t recommend going in the inside as it is modern and there are limited informations about its history. There is an observatory at the top of the dungeon.
There is a little park with a nice but small Japanese garden. You can also visit the Sato Memori al Museum of Art, the museum of Sato Sukekuro, a wealthy Toyama art collector. A tea room is located at the 2nd floor.
Access : it’s a 15min walk from Toyama Station. You can take the Toyama Chihou Railway at Toyamaeki Station, and stop at Kokusaikaigijo-Mae Station (8min for 210 yen).
