A Small Hike for a Great View of Mt Fuji and Lake Kawaguchi
Here is an easy hike, starting from Kawaguchiko, to get a scenic view of Mt Fuji, Lake Kawaguchi and the Japanese Alpes. This is one of my top 5 sunset in Japan ! I went there few times and I would recommend autumn to enjoy the colorful leaves or spring for the sakura. In all cases, Fujisan is always impressive to watch ! If you can see it… My best advice is to plan your trip to Fujiyoshida at the last moment depending on the weather forecast !
The hike starts at Tenjoyamagokoku Shrine, located on the mountain side. It is a small local shrine with not much to see except a wonderful alley of hydrangeas in June (during the rainy season). You’ll find the trail on the right side of the Shrine. It’s an easy trail that follows the ridge of the mountain. Along the trail, you can get nice viewpoints of Fujisan on your right and Lake Kawaguchi on your left. After a 45min to 1 hour hike, you’ll reach Kawaguchiko Tenjozan Park, the end of your hike !
There is also a ropeway that will take you to the observatory from Kawaguchiko (900 yen two ways).
You can keep walking all the way to Mt Mitsutoge (Mitsutogeyama) on a beautiful trail, but this take a full day. Everytime I went to the observatory, I stayed until sunset. At this time, the ropeway might be closed already but you can easily go down to Kawaguchi by the same trail, but make sure you have a light with you. I hope the pictures will convince you to do the same, you might not find a better place to admire a sunset on Mt Fuji !
How to get to Fujiyoshida from Tokyo ? The cheapest option is to take the bus from Tokyo Station/Shibuya/Shinjuku or to book a bus on www.kosokubus.com (2h for around 2000 yen). You can also take the Chūō Line from Shinjuku Station (1h46 for 4000 yen).
Ropeway open from 09:00 to 17:00 (900 yen round trip).
